Bavarian Glass Alliance for the Carbon-Neutral Production of Glass and Glass-Based Products

Logo des EFRE-Projekts Glasallianz Bayern

The goal of the Bavarian Glass Alliance Glasallianz Bayern is to advance the decarbonization of glass and glass-based product manufacturing and to enhance the resilience of the Bavarian glass industry. Technology transfer is being driven forward by linking basic research and process expertise with the specific needs of industry and the glass sector under the motto “shaping the future together,” with the aim of making the Bavarian glass industry and its suppliers future-proof, environmentally sound, and—in particular—resource-efficient, while minimizing CO2 emissions as much as possible.

To tackle this complex task, new approaches are being explored—regarding glass composition and the necessary raw materials, the process technologies and energy sources required for production, as well as the necessary knowledge transfer between universities and industry. The long-term joint innovation initiative “Glass in Bavaria” by the University of Bayreuth and the Deggendorf Institute of Technology has been facilitating sustainable technology transfer to Bavarian companies along the glass manufacturing process chain for more than 10 years. Both at the Keylab Glass Technology at UBT and at the Technology-User Center (TAZ) at THD, R&D collaborations with the glass industry and its suppliers have existed for many years, focusing on application-oriented product and process development, particularly for glass-based products for the construction, energy, and packaging sectors.

GABy aims to help the glass industry build resilience for the future, remain internationally competitive, and at the same time conserve resources and reduce CO2 emissions. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, we are working to find appropriate solutions to emerging challenges.
